Programme Notes

About Tonight's Concert

Tonight's programme celebrates the extraordinary diversity of choral music, from the profound spirituality of traditional hymns to the vibrant energy of contemporary arrangements. The UWI Singers present a carefully curated journey through musical traditions that have shaped both global and Jamaican cultural identity. The evening opens with sacred and classical works that demonstrate the technical mastery and emotional depth of the ensemble. Moses Hogan's arrangement of "My Soul's Been Anchored in de Lord" exemplifies the powerful tradition of African-American spirituals, while Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus" represents the pinnacle of classical sacred music.

Jamaican Musical Heritage

Our commitment to preserving and celebrating Jamaican musical heritage is reflected in our performances of traditional folk songs. "Sunday Day Clothes" and "Half-Way Tree" connect us to the rich oral tradition of Jamaican storytelling through music, while our collaborative arrangement of the National Anthem with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jamaica represents our dedication to national artistic excellence. These works remind us that choral music serves not only as artistic expression but as a vehicle for cultural preservation and community identity.

Contemporary Voices

The second half explores how choral music continues to evolve and speak to contemporary experiences. From Michael Jackson's humanitarian message in "Heal the World" to our innovative "Afrobeats Fusion" medley, these selections demonstrate that choral music remains a vital and relevant art form. Franklin Halliburton's original "Easter Anthem" represents the creative spirit of the UWI Singers, showcasing our commitment to commissioning and performing new works that expand the choral repertoire while honoring traditional techniques.

A Message from the Conductor

Dear Friends and Music Lovers,

It is with immense pride and joy that I present to you this evening's programme with the remarkable UWI Singers. Each voice you will hear tonight represents not just talent, but dedication, passion, and a commitment to the highest standards of choral artistry.

This concert is more than a performance—it is a celebration of our shared musical heritage and a testament to the power of unity through song. From the spiritual depths of "My Soul's Been Anchored in de Lord" to the contemporary energy of our Afrobeats fusion, these young artists demonstrate that music transcends boundaries and speaks directly to the human spirit.

I am particularly excited to share my original "Easter Anthem" with you tonight, a piece that embodies the hope and renewal that music brings to our lives. Working with these talented singers has been one of the greatest privileges of my career, and I know you will be as moved by their artistry as I am every day in rehearsal.

Thank you for supporting the arts and for being part of this musical journey with us.
