Tonight's programme celebrates the extraordinary diversity of choral music, from the profound spirituality of traditional hymns to the vibrant energy of contemporary arrangements. The UWI Singers present a carefully curated journey through musical traditions that have shaped both global and Jamaican cultural identity. The evening opens with sacred and classical works that demonstrate the technical mastery and emotional depth of the ensemble. Moses Hogan's arrangement of "My Soul's Been Anchored in de Lord" exemplifies the powerful tradition of African-American spirituals, while Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus" represents the pinnacle of classical sacred music.
Our commitment to preserving and celebrating Jamaican musical heritage is reflected in our performances of traditional folk songs. "Sunday Day Clothes" and "Half-Way Tree" connect us to the rich oral tradition of Jamaican storytelling through music, while our collaborative arrangement of the National Anthem with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jamaica represents our dedication to national artistic excellence. These works remind us that choral music serves not only as artistic expression but as a vehicle for cultural preservation and community identity.
The second half explores how choral music continues to evolve and speak to contemporary experiences. From Michael Jackson's humanitarian message in "Heal the World" to our innovative "Afrobeats Fusion" medley, these selections demonstrate that choral music remains a vital and relevant art form. Franklin Halliburton's original "Easter Anthem" represents the creative spirit of the UWI Singers, showcasing our commitment to commissioning and performing new works that expand the choral repertoire while honoring traditional techniques.
Franklin Halliburton is a distinguished conductor, composer, and music educator whose passion for choral music has shaped the sound of the UWI Singers for over a decade. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, he brings both technical expertise and artistic vision to his role as Music Director.
Under his leadership, the UWI Singers have expanded their repertoire to include diverse musical styles while maintaining the highest standards of vocal excellence. His original compositions, including several Easter anthems, have become beloved additions to the choir's canon.
Franklin's commitment to musical education extends beyond the university, as he regularly conducts workshops and masterclasses throughout the Caribbean. His collaboration with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jamaica on the National Anthem exemplifies his dedication to preserving and celebrating Jamaican musical heritage.
As a composer, his works blend traditional choral techniques with contemporary harmonies, creating music that speaks to both heart and mind. His leadership of the UWI Singers continues to inspire new generations of musicians and music lovers.
